The annual Frankfurt markets are now officially open in Birmingham. The markets opened on 3rd November and run all along New Street and throughout Victoria Square, with more activities like the ice-skating rink and the ferris wheel further up in Centenary Square. These markets visit Birmingham every year, but they only seem to be getting more festive and welcoming, with the abundance of lights and decorations temporarily transforming part of Birmingham into a Christmas village straight out of a movie for a few months a year.

I had a chance to speak to someone who was visiting the markets, when asked about what he was enjoying about the markets Mr Hall said “I think it’s a really nice community feel and it brings a lot to Birmingham.”, and I think that many others who have visited would agree with this statement. There is certainly a strong sense of community with many people there supporting small businesses, and spending time with their loved ones.

While some people may think that the beginning of November is too early to even be thinking about Christmas, people seemed to already be enjoying the markets after just a few hours of their opening. There were plenty of people scattered around, purchasing things from the stalls, or having drinks at the bar, and already there was a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The markets are suited to all ages and people; there are things on sale like decorations, jewellery, sweets, toys, and plenty of German food and beverages, however even if you aren’t looking to splash any cash, the markets are still an enjoyable experience, with plenty to take in simply by strolling around.

Overall the Frankfurt markets seem to be a fantastic addition to Birmingham for the festive season. They are set to remain open until 23rd December, so there is still plenty of time to plan a visit.
